The cool Autumn weather has finally struck the east coast. Autumn brings changes in vegetation with leaves beginning to change colors and fall off the trees. Sheets of ice can be seen in the early morning across lawns. Bonfires can be smelled from afar on a nightly basis. You may even have to warm up your car in the morning to keep warm on the ride to work. We hope we aren’t already at that point yet, however. Humans are not the only ones excited about all these changes. Our cats are excited as well! Our cat boarding NJ experts discussed some behavioral changes you might see in your cats while the season changes over.
With the cool weather coming into effect and daylight becoming more scarce, you will see your cat take advantage of the sunlight a lot more and keep quiet as the cool night turns over. A lot of cats enjoy sunbathing during this time of the year so expect to find your cat hogging doors and windows quite frequently. Don’t be surprised if your cat starts sleeping more than they already do, which seems nearly impossible with how lazy they already are… Cats will tend to sleep and cuddle up as heat seems to move way south for the colder months.
If your cat loves the outdoors, there is a lot of excitement about to happen. With all the leaves and flowers going away for Autumn, your cat has a lot of new territories to explore. Your cat is going to expect every bush and flower bed that it never had an opportunity to climb on into. All the fallen leaves, berries, acorns, and pine cones will add some extra entertainment as well. It really is Christmas coming early for them with all the new “toys” falling from the sky.
A lot of different critters can be seen making their way around. Some critters are simply roaming outside while others may make their way into the crevices of your home for warmth. Little do they know, your cats are waiting around the corner for them. Many different cats fair as great hunters who will perk up a lot during the autumn season. You can expect your cats to roam the yard a lot more and be bouncing around the house quite a bit with this change going on. It’s only natural.
Another thing to look out for is the amount of yard work picking up in your neighborhood. If your cat enjoys spending time outside and roams a lot, be mindful of this. A lot of toxic chemicals such as rodenticides can be present in nearby homes which can make your cat extremely sick as well as natural mushrooms popping up in lawns. A lot of homeowners enjoy working on vehicles during this time of the year as well. Keep your eye out for chemicals such as oil and antifreeze running off on driveways. These automotive liquids can be very toxic to any kind of animal including your cat.
Don’t sweat it if you see your cat acting differently or weirdly during the change from summer to fall. All living things act differently when the seasons change. It would be a lot worrisome if everyone acted the same year-round…
