Winter has seemed to have bypassed Spring with the hot Summer weather already upon us. Regardless of short fur or long fur, your pets need to stay cool to beat the heat out and avoid any health complications. As the temperature rises, work in these Summer tips to keep your dog safe, and don’t forget about your dog grooming services in South Jersey.
Ticks
Your pets might like to sunbathe outdoors or roll around in the freshly cut grass during the warm months. Unfortunately, ticks are out and about looking to latch themselves on your pet. This is not only a health concern for your pet, but also for you. Ticks can carry deadly diseases and harmful bacteria that can cause infections for your beloved pet. On top of this, the ticks can be carried into your house affecting more parties as well. Be sure you give your pets approved tick medications to keep ticks from staying on your pet.
Beach Safety
Many pets love going to the beach to lounge on the sand or take a dip into the ocean. The beach can be damaging for your dog if you are not a responsible owner. When going to the beach, make sure to bring fresh water and a beach tent to keep your doggy cooled off in the event of a long day trip or week-long stay. If your dog prefers the water or laying on the sand under the sun, be sure to take care of its coat. Salt can be harmful to your dog’s fur so it is important to rinse your pet off as soon as you can after a beach day. Sunscreen is essential as well. Sunscreen should be applied to your dog’s ears and nose to avoid any skin damage from the sun’s rays.
Transportation
Traveling is going to be very common this Summer, especially since previous travel plans were scrapped due to the recent pandemic. If dog boarding in South Jersey isn’t an option, be mindful of transportation tips to keep your pets safe on a plane, car, or RV. When traveling in a car, make sure your pet is cool by providing ice pack blankets and utilize the A/C unit throughout traveling. In the event you have to leave your car for a stop, remember to be mindful of your time away from the car and let your dog out of the car while being supervised if possible. Windows down can be an alternative if you are doing a quick stop for a handful of minutes.
When making plane reservations, be mindful most airline services will not allow your pet to board due to overheating concerns from being in the hull. Check all rules of each airline before booking. If pet travel is allowed, be sure to pack the crate with ice packs and cool blankets to keep them safe during the trip.
If you are traveling via an RV this Summer, make sure to never leave the unit completely closed even if air ventilation and conditioning are running. The exhaust fan or ventilation should be open to allow for airflow throughout the RV. With lots of space to move around, it is important to keep your pet attached to a seat belt or a crate in case a sudden stop occurs which could lead to an accident. Location is also extremely important. When using an RV, the most common vacation is camping. Be sure wherever you go has a veterinarian nearby in case of an emergency.
